This program will include a Sunday afternoon (1 to 5PM) self-guided driving tour of seven cemeteries in northeast Delaware County. A driving guide will be e-mailed to registered attendees. There will be either docents or signage at the cemeteries.
Then we’ll gather at 6:30PM at The Barn at Stratford for reenactments of 8 interested people buried in the cemeteries.
- George Hughes and James Smythe of Galena will talk about their agricultural equipment business.
- Jakie Burrer of Sunbury will talk about his milling business and other stories.
- Henry Cring of Trenton Township has some interesting stories of his business ventures.
- Susannah Bussard Kinney of East Liberty Cemetery will describe the challenges in setting up a homestead in early Porter Township.
- Frances Thayer Thurston of Old Eden Cemetery (north of Kilbourne) will tell you about her life as the wife of Daniel Greene Thurston and the mother of 13 children. The Thurstons are considered the first permanent residents of Brown Township.
- Dr. Ella Welch of Ashley will talk about her career as an early woman physician.
- Wesley Martin of Troy Township will talk about his career as an inventor and early aviator.
